Day Four of nanowrimo

"You are a flatterer.""No. Not at all. I'm sorry.""It's quite all right. A little flattery never hurt any body."I looked at the king and queen as we were dancing. They eyes were affixed onto the two of us. I wondered if they suspected anything about me. I shouldn't dance with him. It's putting me in the spot light. This is silly. I have no business even being here."Is everything all right?" Thesarius asked."The king and queen is staying at us."He looked over his shoulder and then back at me. "Oh Father and Mother. They watching me like a hawk and besides you're the first person I've danced with. Since I'm dancing with you that makes you future queen material in their eyes.""Oh dear," I whispered."Don't worry. No pressure." He smiled. A minute later the music ended and we both bowed to each other. "Thank you for the dance." He took my hand and pressed his lips to it. "It was a pleasure.""I'd like to see you again," he said, following me off of the dance floor.I didn't say anything. Impossible, I thought. I can't possibly see him again. "I don't know," I said, softly."Why? Is it something I said. I'm very sorry if I did or said anything wrong." "Oh no. It's nothing like that. It's just…""What?" He lifted my chin up with his hand. "I know I don't know you. I don't know anything about you and that is precisesly why I want to see you again. You seem like someone I'd like to get to know.""I thought you had to find the person you were going to marry tonight.""Yeah. Well. It's not what I want.""Well sometimes we have to do things that we don't want to do. People control our lives and we have no say." "Exactly. So you know how I feel?""Well I suppose.""Well I won't stand for it. I want to get to know the person before I marry her." He took both of my hands into his. "Please let me see you again.""There's thousands of women here who would love to dance with you and marry you. You should go get to know them." "They only want to be with me because of my political standing." He sighed. "I may be next in line for king, but I'm still human. I have feelings. I still yearn for love. Real love. That's something my parents know nothing about. They didn't even meet each other until they were standing at the altar together. Do you think that's what I want?"I shook my head."It's not what I want. Not at all.""Well I certainly can understand that." We walked hand in hand outside to a balcony overlooking a magnicifent garden. There were mazes of bushes. Statues were placed throughout the beautiful flowers. Some of the statues spouted off water. Every bush was dusted with lights. I had never seen such a beautiful arrangement. It was breath taking. "I can't imagine having to live with someone who wasn't my best friend or someone I wasn't in love with." Thesarius stood up and stuck out his hand. "Let's go for a walk."I took his hand. "Where will we walk to?""Just around the garden. It's beautiful isn't it?"I looked out over the garden. "It's breath taking.""Yes you are," he whispered. I looked over at him and looked into his deep green eyes. What kind eyes he had. Thesarius was quite handsome. I won't lie about that. I had seen him before and I have always thought that he was attractive. He had wavy brown hair that had flecks of gold in it. He was tall and when I looked at him I had to look up. He was also quite skinny. His green eyes were large and he had beautiful paintbrush eye lashes. We gazed at each other for a minute or two and he shook himself out of it. "I'm sorry," he said. "I shouldn't have said that."I said nothing and he took my hand and led me to steps that weaved their way down to the garden below. While we were walking he said, "So tell me something about yourself. I'd like to get to know you more."I didn't know what to say. I did not want to reveal too much about myself. I felt a little uncomfortable being with him. Of course I enjoyed his company but I was not really allowing myself to enjoy it. I kept thinking about Morgana and what mischief she was getting into. We're gonna get caught, I kept thinking. We're gonna get caught. I felt a terrible pain in my stomach from worrying. I shouldn't have come."Snow? Are you sure you're all right. You seem a little out of it." "Oh. I'm sorry. I'm just not feeling very well.""Oh well let's sit down." He led me over to a beautiful concrete bench that had an intricate design of cherubs on the legs of the bench. We sat down. "Is that better?"I shook my head yes. "Thank you.""It's quite all right." He rubbed my shoulder. "I would still like to know more about you. Where do you live?""I live in Farthing." That was a kingdom just to the north of the enchanted forest where my mother lived. I had been to that kingdom several times to see some giants. I was very good friends with quite a few of the Farthing Giants. I also knew a few Gnomes that lived in Farthing. It was a beautiful kingdom. Small but beatiful and the king and queen had over a dozen daughters. There was know way that Thesarius would know all of them. I couldn't keep up with them all."Oh so your one of King Balthfasar's daughters?""Yes," I lied."Then you've got a large amount of sisters haven't you?""Oh yes I've got so many I've lost count of them all."He laughed. His smile and laugh were rather charming. "So what are some of your specialties? Art? Literature? Dancing?""Oh well I love to sketch and I do love literature.""Well I will have to see some of your drawings.""Yes. That would be lovely.""Your highness! There you are!" A short and rather chubby man was running towards us. "We've been looking for you everywhere!""What's wrong, Thelonius?" Thesarius went over to him. "Calm down and tell me what's the matter." "Some one has broken into the hall of secrets and the magic shields are on the blink. A worlock guard said that a strand of magic looked as if it had been bitten into." The man threw up his arms. "How on earth can magic me bitten?"I put my hand over my mouth in shock. "Morgana," I whispered.Thesarius turned around. "What did you say, Snow?""Oh. I said, Oh dear.""I must tend to this problem at once. Please calm down and escort Miss Snow to my private meeting quarters." He turned to me. "Please wait there. I'd like to finish our chat once everything settles down." "But…" I called to him, but he had already began rushing towards the palace. What on earth did Morgana do? I thought. Only a magical creature can bite into magic. Since they can't perform magic they can disable it by chewing on it and only magical creatures and those that can perform magic can see the magic.I knew she was going to get us into trouble. I should have known."Please miss," the man said. "Come with me. I must get you to the prince's quarters at once." I followed him and as we were walking I felt something leap onto my shoulders. "Owe," I moaned. It was Morgana. Her claws had dug into my skin."What's the matter Miss?""Oh nothing. Just a pain in my shoulder.""Well please hurry. I must attend to the problem at hand."When the man had put us in the room I said, "Morgana what have you done?""I shut down all of the magic shields.""Why would you do that?""So that I could get into the hall of secrets.""Why on earth you want to get in there?" I shouted. "Do you know what you have done? They're liable to burn me at the stake!" "Oh Snow my dear don't be so over reactive.""Over reactive! You've committed a serious crime. What did you take in the hall of secrets?" "The one thing that King Winsor has been using against the magical creatures of the kingdom.""And what pray tell is that?""The spell he has his worlocks use. I've been planning this mission with Tessy and the other dragons for months. I knew I couldn't tell you or you wouldn't go.""Morgana! I can't believe that you used me! I thought you were my friend." She hissed at me. "I'm doing this for your own good and for the good of the other magical creatures. We can not and should not be controlled.""But to do it this way.""Look. The magic shields are down. I've got the spell. Get us out of here!""I can't just disappear. Prince Thesarius will look for me. He said to stay here." "Oh posh. Unless you gave away your identity he'll never find you.""But…""Don't tell me you like him." "Of course not.""Well okay then. Unless you want us to get caught, get us out of here.""I just can't believe you!" I said the transportation spell and seconds later we were just outside of where my mother's house had shifted to. I removed the invisibility spell from Morgana and she took off to my little shack. "Follow me!" she called. When we had gotten into the shack she said, "Hurry write this down." She began to recite the spell and I wrote it down as she spoke.

Day Three of nanowrimo

When I walked out the front door I saw Ella sitting on the front steps. "The ball is tonight," Ella said with her back to me. "I wish I could be there. I bet everyone will be dressed beautifuly and I'll bet that they dance elegantly. I would love to dance with the prince.""I'm sure it's not all that great," I said, walking toward her. I walked down the steps and stood in front of her. "It's just a dance where the prince is being forced to choose a wife.""You want to go too don't you?" She looked up at me and I shifted my feet. It was a warm night and the sky was over flowing with stars. I enjoyed seeing the stars from Father's house. The trees of the enchanted forest covered the night sky. "I don't see why I would," I turned to look behind me. "It's getting late and I must be off.""What do you mean? I thought tonight was your night to stay here." "Well I've got to be at Mother's tonight. I'll see you tomorrow.""Oh fiddlesticks. I was hoping to go frog searching tonight.""What would you want with a frog?" I said, puzzled. "I was hoping you could cast a spell on it to turn it into a handsome prince.""Well I'd love to but turning creatures into royalty is not my one of my strong points." "Darn." She giggled. "I suppose I'll just have to continue wishing for a prince." "I'm sure they're not all they're cracked up to be, but if you must then I leave you to your wishing."She sighed. "Okay."I waved my hand in the air and said the transportation spell and with a cloud of smoke I was off. "There you are!" Morgana said when I arrived in front of her at the clearing in the woods we had met at yesterday. "Where have you been?""I've been trying to explain to Father and Ella why I needed to stay at Mother's tonight. It's not easy you know and I certainly don't like having to lie to them." "Well I'm sorry. I'm just a bit nervous. The ball will be starting soon." "Well then I must begin the invisibility spell." I lifted my hands and began to recite the spell. When I had finished Morgana was gone. "Morgana where are you?""Oh wouldn't you like to know," she said, in a sly voice. "Very funny.""Excuse me dear," I heard a voice say."Um. Morgana? Was that you?""Did it sound like me?" Morgana said with an attitude."Dear it's me."I turned around. "Oh Princess Erogarden. You're back.""Of course I am," the small faerie said. "You need a dress and this one is my gift to you." She waved her wand and I turned around and I was dressed in an elegant yellow dress with blue sleeves and red ruffles. My blond hair was pulled back with a red ribon and my cheeks were pink and my lips were painted red. "Oh this is too much," I said. "And don't you think I could have magically changed my clothes. I do it all the time.""Well," Erogarden said with a voice of disdain. "If you don't like my gift…""No I do. I do like your gift. It's beautiful. Thank you. I'll wear it.""Good!" She began to fly away. "I must be off to help other young girls achieve their dream of going to the ball." "She does think she's a fairy godmother," I said to Morgana where ever she was at."Well don't worry about her your highness; we've got a ball to crash."And with a wave of my hand we were off to the palace.

Chapter Two
The First Dance
Before I continue with our story at the ball I'd like to explain more about my home life. You see my Mother and Father met each other a year before they had me. They were in love and were best friends. My mother was a young witch at the time being only 17 and my father, a slightly older but still young worlock was at the age of 20. My father was a strong and powerful worlock who spent most of his time working for King Arthur. Well over the years my parents grew apart and became bored with each other. They faught, using their powers against each other. Once Mother turned Father into a mouse and she tried sending the cat after him, but Father was too quick for that cat. Anyway, about two years ago they seperated from each other and Lucinda and I moved with Mother. I decided that since my parents both wanted to see me so much that I would live in both houses. Lucinda decided to live only with Mother. After a while Father remaired and Hilda and Ella moved in. Father decided to marry a human. Mother said it was because Father wanted to be able to have all the power in the family and that he couldn't stand that Mother was just as powerful as he was. Now back the story. When we arrived outside of the palace Morgana was sitting on my shoulder and was still invisible. I was very nervous and I knew that I had to be extremely careful not to do any kind of my magic. I walked into the ballroom and stopped in awe. It was the most beautiful place I had ever seen. Gold pillars with intricate patterns lined the room and even the floor had gold woven into it. "How beautiful," I whispered.Men and women in elegent tuxedos and gorgeous gowns flooded the room. The dance floor was full of people dancing and smiling. Towards the front of the room were the thrones where the king and queen were sitting and beside them sat the prince. He stared out across the crowd looking unamused. His elbow rested on the arm of his throne and he held his head up with his hand. The poor guy, I thought."I'm off," I heard Morgana whisper and I felt her jump from my shoulder."Where are you going?" I said."Pardon me miss?" A man said, turning around. "What did you say?" "Oh nothing," I said, lifting the bottom of my gown off of the floor so that I could walk down the steps easier. When I began walking down the steps I saw the prince look up. Is he looking at me, I thought. Of course not. I shook the idea away. Well, I thought. Morgana has left me and now I don't know what to do here. I want to leave, but I can't leave with out her.I looked down at my shoes. These things are gonna kill my feet after awhile."Excuse me Ma'am."I looked up and saw the prince standing in front of me. I jumped. "Oh.""I'm sorry. Did I startle you?""Oh no your highness," I said, bowing. "I'm sorry.""It's quite all right." He took my hand. "Would you like to dance?" "Yes your highness," I said, curtsieing. He led me out to the dance floor and I could see that all eyes were on us. Oh dear, I thought. Everyone's noticing me. I felt like they could see right through me. She's a witch. She doesn't belong here. "Are you all right?" The prince asked."Oh. Yes thank you. I'm just a little nervous," I admitted. "Well don't be." He leaned his lips towards my ear. "I promise I don't bite," he whispered. I giggled. "Well that makes me feel better.""Good," he said with a sweet smile. "Well I don't believe I've properly introduced myself." He stopped and took a bow holding out his hand. "My name is Prince Thesarius Balfusar Winsor the second and you may call me Thesarius."I curtsied. "Nice to make your aquantence Prince Thesarius."He took my hand and we began to dance again. "Please just call me Thesarius.""Thesarius," I said, correcting myself."That's better," he said, smiling. Now what is your name?""Oh." I stopped. What should I say, I thought. Well I suppose giving him my real first name wouldn't hurt anything. "My name is Snow.""A beautiful name for a beautiful woman.""You're very sweet.""You know. The night has been quite boring for me.""But it just started.""I know and it's all ready boring."I smile. "Well I'm sorry you are so bored.""Well I'm not anymore. I noticed you right away when you came down those steps. You are the most beautiful human being I've ever seen."I frowned, thinking but I'm not human. He seems very sweet but he wouldn't think I were so beautiful if he knew I were a witch.

Day Two of nanowrimo

"Perfect. Now I can get started." Later that evening around dusk I was sitting out in the garden on a small bridge, staring down at the fish as they passed through the stream. "Snow!"I Looked up. Morgana was running towards me."Snow, guess what?" She ran and jumped onto my shoulder."Careful, Morgana. Remember your claws."She nuzzled me with her head. "Sorry. I'm just excited. I found out that the ball is tomorrow night.""I know." I looked back down at the stream."Well what's the matter?""Oh nothing," I said, pulling a scroll out of the air. "Here it is, and if we get caught I'll turn you into a toad…that can't talk." "Meow! It's purrrfect.""You still haven't told me why you want to go so badly. You know I don't like the idea of you conspiring with dragons. You know how they can be.""Why miss I'm sure I don't know what you mean." She licked her paw and stuck her nose up. "I'm not conspiring and Tessy is different.""Oh I'm not so sure about that. You know how she and all the other dragons feel about royalty. After all they've sent several of their knights out to kill the dragons and for what reason?""Well I don't know, but Tessy is not bitter. It's her husband Loch who is the bitter one. He won't even spare a bit of fish for a hungry kitty." She licked her other paw."Oh Morgana what am I going to do with you?" I said, scratching her head."Keep me I hope." She strutted off towards the house. "Where are you going?""Well I must decide what to wear to the ball.""You'll wear this invisible spell that's what you'll wear."With a meow she was gone into the house. Hmm, I thought. "What am I going to wear? It can't be anything to flashy. I can't draw attention to myself. I suppose a simple little dress will do.""Oh no dear that won't do at all."I spun around. "Who are you?" There was a small faerie floating above me. She was encircled by glitter and a bright pink light."I'm Erogarden, the princess of the faeries.""Oh why yes. I'm sorry your highness I didn't recognize you at first. You startled me.""It's quite all right. Please forgive me put I over heard you say that you didn't have anything to wear to the ball." "I never said I was going to the ball.""Oh. Well…" she flew closer to me and touched my nose with her wand. "That is wear you plan to go tomorrow, is it not?""Of course not. You know witches aren't allowed to go to the palace.""Well you can't let that stop you. You're very beautiful. The prince will love you." "Oh I don't care about meeting the prince. I would just love to see the palace.""Then you should and you should be dressed in a beautiful gown.""What are you? My fairy godmother?""Why no. I'm not that kind of fairy, and you know it.""Yes your highness."She began to fly away, leaving a path of glitter behind her. I'll be back tomorrow to see that you are propperly dressed. "Snow!" My mother was calling me. "Come in dear. It's dark out."I stood up and brushed off my pants. "I'm coming." I ran barefoot to the house and up the stairs to the back porch. "Hello, Dear. Haven't seen you all day." She kissed me on the cheek. "I've been busy studying spells and…""Day dreaming in the garden?" She smiled and brushed a lock of hair away from my face. "I wish you hadn't changed your hair color. You look nothing like a witch.""Well that is what I was going for." I walked past her into the dinning room."You don't want to be a witch?" She said with concern in her voice."Of course I want to be a wich; I just don't want to look like a witch.""Are you ashamed?""No. I just want to be different. I don't want to look the same as every other witch. Besides I'm not the only witch to dye her hair. Why even Lucinda is thinking of dying her hair.""Yes well she wants to dye it a normal color, like green or orange, but you had to dye your hair so that you look human.""Oh mother. There's nothing wrong with humans.""Bite your tongue.""Goodnight, Mother. I'll be in my room." When I got up to my room Lucinda was sitting on my bed petting Morgana. "Hello, Snow! How have you been today?" "All right I guess.""What have you been doing in my room?"She looked down at Morgana. At 17 years old she was a quite attractive young witch. She had the typical long brown hair and blue eyes. She was wearing her long black night robe that she had decorated with plastic gems. "I was just petting Morgana. She's such a lovely cat."Morgana stood up and rubbed up against Lucinda. "It's so true." She purred.Lucinda giggled and scratched Morgana's chin."Well I'd like to have a chat with Morgana alone."Lucinda stood up and smoothed her dress. "All right. I'll be off to my room. I'd like to get some reading in before I go to sleep.""Good night Lil' sis.""Good night big sis." She left the room closing the door behind her.I sat on the bed and picked up Morgana, putting her in my lap. "I just had a nice little chat with the faerie princess." "Why what ever did you and Miss Erogarden talk about?" Morgana said, curling up in my lap."Well what else do us girls talk about but clothing. She wants to act like a fairy godmother and dress me up like a princess so the prince will look at me and fall madly in love." Morgana stuck her head up. "And what's wrong with that?""I'm not looking for love and besides it's forbidden for the prince to marry anyone except a princess and he certainly couldn't marry a witch. Not that he would ever even consider it.""But he won't know you're a witch.""A witch is what I am and I can't change that. The truth would come out sooner or later.""I suppose," she said with a big yawn. "But imagine how wonderful it would be for a witch to be queen." I laid down. "That is what he would never want to happen." The next evening Morgana and I ventured off into the forest to set and talk about a plan for tonight's "mission" as Morgana called it. We were sitting near a small pond with lilly pads and it was nestled in a clearing in the woods. A frog jumped from a rock to a lilly pad and croaked at Morgana. She was sitting on a rock near by with her but in the air and her nose close to the water. A gold fish swam by and Morgana swung her paw in the water and pulled the fish out. "Ahh what fun fishing is," she said, tossing the fish onto the rock. She settled down and began to tear open the fish. "That's gross," I said, turning away."Cats gotta eat," Morgana said, putting a bit of fish in her mouth. She was so dainty with her food. "Well about tonight. I've got an idea and this is where having two houses will come in handy."Morgana hissed at the frog that was staring at her. "Do you want to be like him?" she said, showing him the fish. The frog jumped back into the water. "I thought not.""Morgana please concentrate.""Sorry. I just had to get rid of a green problem." She licked some fish off of her paws and said, "Please continue." "Well I was thinking that I could tell Father that I'm going to stay at Mother's tonight and Mother will think that I'm at Father's.""Brilliant. I don't know why I didn't think of it." She was back in the attack position; her butt was in the air and her nose was touching the water. "Come to me little fishes," she taunted. "Morgana needs her dinner.""I was also thinking that we should only stay for a little while. You know, check out the place and then go. I'll be so nervous that I don't think I could stay the entire night anyway.""Oh posh." Morgana was now slicing apart another fish. "You'll be fine. I'll at least need a few hours.""What do you mean you'll need a few hours?"She looked up at me with a puzzled look on her face. "Why Snow I don't know what you mean?""Yes you do," I said getting up and walking closer to the rock she was sitting on. "What are you going to be doing at the palace? You're not going to get into trouble are you?""Of course not, and besides I'll be invisible right?""Well yes but that doesn't matter. The warlocks that King Winsor has on guard can brake invisible spells if they detect one. You need to stay low and stay with me.""Oh Miss Snow, you worry too much.""No I don't I just don't want to get into trouble and I want to be let in on your little sceam.""Listen Snow you'll find out in do time. I can't reveal it now.""Why? Because I'll refuse to go if you do tell me?""Possibly." Later I went over to Father's to tell him that I would be staying at Mother's tonight. Father was sitting at his desk in his office mulling over some papers. When I walked in he looked up from his paper and said, "There's my darling Snow. I haven't seen you in a while. Have cast some good spells lately?""I suppose.""Well I think we should spend some time together tonight. How about we…""Actually Father…" I said, stopping him. "I would love to do something with you but I need to stay at Mother's tonight." "What do you mean? This is my night to be with you." He got up from his chair and walked over to me. He put his hands on my cheeks. "You just tell your mother that she can see you tomorrow."I pulled away from his hands. "I'm sorry but I'd like to stay over there tonight because Lucinda needs my help with something. I promise we'll spend time together the next night.""I just don't understand why you want to spend time with your mother I not me.""It's not that at all Father. I've just got to be there for Lucinda." I kissed his cheek. "I love you, Father. I'll see you tomorrow." I headed for the door. "I love you too, Snow.""If you continue to see her you will be removed from the royal family." "Why can't I love whom I choose?""Because you are to be king and this kingdom will never have a witch for a ruler." "I'm sorry Snow but duty to my country comes first.""Why can't love come first?""It does not work that way. You know I love you, but sometimes when you love someone you have to let them go. It's for your own good.""For my own good? No it's not! It's not about me wanting to be queen. It's about me being in love with you. What about what's right for us?" "Where were you last night?""I was out, Father. It's none of your business where I was.""None of my business!?!" he shouted. "Of course it's my business for goodness sake! You are my son and the next ruler of this land! You have no business being gone all night where no one knows where you were!"He looked down. "I'm going to my room.""No! You will stay right here. You were with that witch weren't you?" He didn't say anything.over and over again. "This can't be happening." "I knew it. You have deliberatly disobeyed me for the last time. Tomorrow I will set up a counsel to have you removed from reign of the throne."He looked at his father with fear in his eyes. "No Father. This is my life. This is what I've wanted my entire life. This kingdom is mine.""Not anymore." His father stormed off and Thesarius fell to his knees and began to sob into his hands. "Stop!" I shouted at the mirror on the wall and it immediately went dark. I fell to the floor and began to cry harder than I ever had before. Tears flowed from eyes and drenched my face. "No. No," I repeated

Day One of Nanowrimo

Chapter One
Shall we go to the ball?

Once upon a time I lived. There’s my first sentence. I’m writing this story about myself because a lot of the happenings in my life and the lives of those around me need to be written.
My name is Snow and I live in an enchanted forest just west of the Palace. My story starts under the rule of King Winsor. I didn’t think too much about how King Winsor’s political views and decisions affected me or those around me. I just followed the rules and lived in my own little world in the forest.
I associated with all the creatures in the forest. There were giants, gnomes, ogres, witches, warlocks, wizards, fairies, dragons and so on. We all got along except warlocks and witches could not stand wizards and vice versa. Wizards just think they know everything about magic when it’s the witches who are the most powerful.
Anyway, a little about me…I’m a witch. I guess you kinda figured that by my remark about wizards. Well I’m a young witch, 20 years of age and I’ve lived in the West Side Waverly Enchanted Forest all of my life. I have a best friend and that is Morgana my fuzzy black cat. She thinks she knows everything but I love her anyway.
Since the forest is always changing it’s hard to tell an exact location of my house but it is a beautiful house. It’s small, one story and surround by beautiful flower gardens and a white picket fence. We also have magic gardens where we grow a variety of things for spells and enchantments.
I live with my mother, Milificent, and little sister, Lucinda. My warlock father, Bartholomew lives on the outskirts of the Palace with my stepmother, Hilda and my stepsister, Ella.
Well anyway, I visit my father quite often and of course Morgana accompanies me she enjoys braking away from the monotony of living in one home.
One warm evening I sat out in the backyard in a large wicker chair and had propped my bare feet up on the matching wicker foot stool. I wore a long white skirt that was trimmed in lace and a light pink tank top. I sat for a while with my eyes closed just soaking up the sun.
When I opened my eyes I saw Morgana running towards me. She took a flying leap and landed on the arm of the chair I was sitting in. “Well hello Morgana,” I said, patting her head. “Where have you been?”
“I have been over at Tessy’s place. She invited me in for milk. We had an interesting chat.”
“Really? Well what about?” Tessy is a dragon who lives in the caves just outside of the forest. You can get to the edge of the forest by hoping through a hole in the magic that runs through the forest, but you must be careful to hop through the right one.
“She said she heard talk of a ball at the palace. The prince is looking for a wife.”
“Really? That’s very interesting.”
“You should go.”
“Now Morgana, you know that the palace balls and get together are by invitation only and witches, warlocks, wizards, and animals are not allowed.”
“So what,” she said rubbing her back against my shoulder. We can crash it. Besides you don’t look like a witch. You have beautiful blond hair and brown eyes. Everyone knows that all witches have brown hair and blue eyes.”
“Well that’s why I died my hair and invented a potion for changing eye color. I don’t want to look like every other witch.”
She purred. “You need to get out more and how hard can it be to conjure up a spell for fake invitations.”
“You are so bad, Morgana. You know I couldn’t do that. It would be deceitful.”
She raised her back. “Oh pooh! You need to learn to walk on the wild side.”
“What do you mean?” I said putting my hand to my chest. “I do walk on the wild side.”
“Hah!”
“Well I walk with you don’t I? Besides I’m not interested in dancing with the prince. He seems so…well I don’t know…royal.”
“Oh, Snow, forget about the prince. They’ll be many more people to see.”
“Morgana, why do you want to go so badly?”
She licked her paw. “Oh…no reason. I just thought it would please you to go.”
“Yeah right,” I said, scratching under her chin. “I know you better than that.”
She jumped down off of the chair. “I’ll find out the date. You start the potion for fake invitations.”
Oh dear, I thought. Now I don’t know what to do. I suppose I’d like to go to the palace. I’ve never been within the palace walls. Of course I’ve seen what it looks like inside through my looking glass, but it’s not the same, and the king has had several parts of the palace cut off to magic mirrors and looking glasses. Even the most powerful of warlocks and witches haven’t been able to brake through the spell put on the castle. I don’t even have to mention that the wizards can’t brake through it.
Well anyway, what would a shy witch like myself do at such an extravagant ball and what if Morgana and I were caught? We could be put in a prison where magic cannot be performed. I just don’t know if I can take the risk.
Later that night, I lay in bed at Father’s house. A candle flickered on the bed side table and Ella lay in the bed next to mine. Morgan was curled up at the end of bed.
“What ya thinking about, Snow?” Ella asked.
“I was thinking about how the King has viewed the magical creatures and animals as less than humans and caused them to be separate. It’s like he’s afraid of us.”
“Well of course he is, Snow. It’s because you all are more powerful than he is. Oh sure he’s got the reign, but any of you at any time could use your powers against him. Of course he does have some powerful warlocks on his side.”
“Yeah. There the ones making all the spells to keep us out. If only Father’s health were better. He used to be powerful and influenced a lot of kings and queens in his time. We lived more united when King Arthur reigned.”
“Why are you worrying about this all of a sudden? So what you can’t go to the palace. It’s not that bad.”
“Easy for you to say. You could go if you wanted too.”
“No I can’t and you know it. Mother was shut off from that privilege when she married a warlock. She lost her title and political standing just for your father.”
“She really does love him then; doesn’t she?”
“I suppose so.” Ella sat up in bed; her red hair was piled up on top of her head and her cheeks were dotted with freckles. The candle light danced on her face. “You heard about the ball, didn’t you?”
Morgana’s head shot up and looked at Ella. She meowed softly.
“I guess Morgana didn’t want me to know. Huh?”
“Ridiculous,” Morgana hissed. “I’ve never heard of this ball.” She stretched out her front legs and curled back into a ball.
“Well excuse me, miss Morgana,” Ella said, giggling. “I won’t say another word.” She laid back down. “Goodnight, Snow.”
“Goodnight, Ella,” I said, blowing out the candle. The room was now pitch dark. I would like to go to the ball I thought.
The next morning when I woke up Morgana was laying on my chest with her tale in my face. “Oh yuck, Morgana. You’re getting fur in my mouth.”
She stood up and stretched. “Excuse Me.” She hopped off the bed. “I’m off to talk to a dragon about a ball. I’ll see you at your mother’s later this evening.”
“Oh, Morgana.”
“None of that. We’re going and that’s that.”
How did I get mixed up with such an impossible cat, I thought. She’s a bad influence on me, I decided.
I looked over to Ella’s bed and she was gone. Hmm…I wonder where she went.
I got out of bed and went to the kitchen. Hilda was sitting at the table holding a cup of hot tea in her hand and a book in the other.
She looked up from her book. “Good morning, sunshine,” She said with a smile. Your father’s gone to work and Ella has gone the market. We’re running low on some things.
“Oh.”
“You going to be off again? It seems like you don’t stick around here very much.”
“Well I do have some spells to study.”
“Very well. I’ll tell your father you can be reached on your mirror.” She took a sip of tea and concentrated back on her book. I could tell she wanted to say no more to me and wasn’t looking for a response. She may love my father, but she acts like she doesn’t think much of me.
I turned the door to leave then looked down at my clothing. Oh dear, I thought. Can’t forget to change. I snapped my fingers twice and was now wearing a short black dress with black ballerina shoes.
Morgana’s right. I need to walk on the wild side. I don’t take risks. After all I am a witch. I can be strong and powerful. I guess I can do it.
I straightened up. No. I can do it.
I waved my hand in the air and said the traveling spell. When I turned around I was back at my mother’s house. In the far back of our yard past the rose bushes there is a beautiful little shack covered in vines. This is where I go to study my spells and invent incantations. Spell making is an art and I embrace the art with creativity and thought. Making the invitation will be easy. First I need to know exactly what it looks like.
I walked over to my beautiful witch’s mirror that my grandmother had given me for my thirteenth birthday. This was my window to the outside world.
“Mirror, Mirror on the wall. Show me the invitation to the ball.”
A cloud of smoke encircled the mirror and when it settled a scroll of parchment paper was shown.
